As the little gold men were being polished and lined up on a table backstage at the Oscars, the stars were being plucked, waxed, blow dried, dusted, moisturized, brushed and zipped ready for the most coveted red carpet of the year. It’s a long tradition that the fashion of the night is followed just as carefully as the winners, so in true tradition, here’s our Oscars fashion lowdown. Leading the best dressed was Meryl Streep in her white Chris March with nipped in waist and plunging neckline – elegant and so figure flattering. Cameron Diaz sparkled and shone in her gold Armani Prive, Nicole Richie looked pure glam in her dark hued Reem Accra long sleeved gown and Brit girl Victoria Beckham chose a bit of shameless self promotion in one of her own designs – and why not? She looked positively statuesque. Fashion guru Sarah Jessica Parker looked uber-glam in her yellow gown with rose detail on the bust and Inglourious Basterds star Diane Kruger really was red carpet worthy in her nude and black halter neck dress – both Chanel Couture. SJP said that Karl (Lagerfeld) had made the dress espeically for her. We’re so jealous! Miley Cyrus chose a nude Jenny Packham dress with a beaded skirt that made her look all grown up and gorgeous, Jennifer Lopez and Amanda Seyfried wore futuristic Armani Prive gowns that both had rigid detailing at the bust – futuristic and slightly GaGa-ish, and Zoe Saldana (Avatar) went big, ruffled and purple in a stunning Givenchy gown equipped with a rather sparkly bodice. Marchesa, along with Sandra Bullock, were the big winners of the night fashion wise. ‘Up In The Air’ star Vera Farmiga wore a strapless, deep pink ruffle gown – the origami detail being synonymous to Marchesa’s collections, Sandra Bullock posed like the Oscar she won in the intricate crystal beaded bodice and long trained dress, and Gabourey Sidibe of Precious stood proud in her royal blue full length frock which had crystal detailing at the bust and waist. We weren’t mad keen on Charlize Theron’s pale lilac Dior dress, the rose detail on the bust was slightly strange, and Mariah Carey went safe and a little boring in a relatively plain blue Valentino. Overall a good year for the frock. Next year, when the Henry Fox team are invited to Hollywood, we’ll show them how it’s done!
