Designer to watch: Richard Malone
This September London Fashion Week features several designers under its ‘NewGen’ talent scheme which supports upcoming designers and brands through sponsorship, business advice and mentoring. NewGen ( New Generation) was launched in 1993 as a pathway to design success .‘The designers who graduate through this scheme are the lifeblood of London and its reputation as a creative hotbed with business credentials developed at a very early stage’ Sarah Mower (Chair of the NewGen committee).
Richard Malone, a Central Saint Martins graduate, has a colourful and modern design aesthetic. Since graduating in 2014, Malone has produced five collections, often taking his inspiration from the everyday things such as traffic signs and workwear. Malone bases his collections on what he knows, a refreshing and intriguing stance to take in a creatively competitive fashion world. His viewpoint and creating an expression of everyday life have lead him to create collections based on his mother’s Argos uniform and the sexual politics of oyster season back in his home town.
Malone has won several awards including the LVMH Grand Prix scholarship and the Deutsche Bank Award for Fashion (which was previously awarded to Christopher Kane). In an interview with Dazed magazine, Malone stresses the importance of his desire to not be in the spotlight – ‘ I don’t want my face to be everywhere… I’d rather stand back and design clothes’. Richard Malone is running his own design agenda, let’s hope it works.
His new collection will be shown at London Fashion Week on the 15th of September 2017.
